Science Fiction/Fantasy If you've visited my Favorite Romances page, you know that I confessed to knowing too many romance authors to risk making a list. Fortunately, I don't know a single science fiction or fantasy author <g>, though there are a few I'd like to meet since I've always loved the genre. Actually, when I began writing, this is what I thought I'd write. Now I'm glad I didn't. It's one of the few genres I still enjoy as a reader. I don't analyze it or try to figure out what an author did right or wrong. I just sit back, relax and enjoy. Here are the best I've read recently.
I can't say enough good about Orson Scott Card. He's amazing, and I've been reading his books for years. Ender's Shadow is the most recent in the Ender Series that started with Ender's Game -- which if you like science fiction and haven't read, run to the nearest bookstore. It won both the HUGO and NEBULA awards. It's a classic! And Ender's Shadow is just as good. It's the same story, told from a different perspective. Not many authors could have pulled this off, but Orson Scott Card succeeded.

This is the first in the A Song of Ice and Fire Series, and it's great. Everything about it -- the writing, the storytelling, and the characters -- is fantastic. I read it when it first came out in hardcover in one sitting. Yep, I started in the morning and couldn't stop -- and it's not a short book. So, why haven't I read the others in the series? Well, because at the time there were none, and now I want to wait until I have time to reread the first, then the second and so on. This book was that good.

I've just finished the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. It's a dark fantasy which I highly recommend. It has some of everything: magic, suspense, romance, adventure. I loved it! Just two warnings. First, as I said, it's dark. So if you're squeamish, this might not be for you. Second, I'd suggest buying all three books at once. Or at least going out and getting Book #2 and #3 after the first fifty pages of Book #1 hooks you. Because, when you finish the first book, you're going to want the second one right NOW. There's also a prequel to this series, The Invisible Ring, which I enjoyed.

A couple of caveats about reading her books and these books in particular. They're not for everyone. Don't worry, there's noting dark about them like the Anne Bishop books. They are classic good vs. evil stories of sorcery and magic. However, some people find the writing in these books a bit difficult. At times it lacks clarity and at other times there's so much detail that you might be tempted to skim. However, IMO, C.J. Cherryh is a consummate storyteller. Every time I pick up one of her books, I'm caught by the characters and her ability to weave a tale. So try one and see what you think.
