This is my catchall category for those books that don't fit into one of the above genres. I read a little bit of everything, so you might find a few literary works here, an Oprah book or two, some classics and even some interesting non-fiction. At first, I just listed the ones that came to mind, but I keep updating the list as I read more. I guess sooner or later I'll have to organize these somehow, but for now, enjoy browings.

For May, I've added a couple of unusual books. A non-fiction book on the CIA, See No Evil, and another book, Last Breath which is fiction--sort of. Go take a look and enjoy.

NEW!

Cover: Last Breath

  Last Breath by Peter Stark
Cautionary Tales from the Limits of Human Endurance
   (Ballantine Books ISBN: 0-345-44150-8)

This is not a book I would have normally bought. I picked it up at a Bookseller's Convention where publishers were giving away books. As a lover of books, I couldn't turn this or a couple dozen others, down. But this book is fascinating!

Last Breath is a collection of short stories fictionalizing the events--the why, how and results--when man pits himself, sometimes unwittingly, against the elements. For instance, the first story titled: As Freezing Persons Recollect the Snow: Hypothermia, follows a young man's journey from the moment he makes the wrong decision that exposes him to a snow storm in the Colorado Mountain to. . . Well, I'm not going to tell you the end. Each story is different, but each intriguing. Stark goes into detail on what happens in someone's mind and body as they face deadly element. Call me ghoulish, but I couldn't stop reading.

NEW!

Cover: See No Evil

See No Evil by Robert Baer
   (Crown Publishing Group ISBN: 0-609-609-874)

This is the first non-fiction book I've included on my list of favorites. I read a lot of non-fiction, some out of interest and others, like See No Evil, for research. So why include this particular book in my list of favorites? Simple, it's a really interesting book for anyone who enjoys inside glimpses of the U.S. Government and/or one of its Agencies. This book is an insider's look at the CIA -- and it's frightening. But not in the way most people think. Instead, it's a look at how the CIA has become ineffective and bogged down in politics and ambition just like any other large bureaucratic organization. Scary stuff.

Cover: Mossy Creek   Mossy Creek   by Deborah Smith, Sandra Chastain, Donna Ball,
- - - - - - - - - - - - - Debra Dixon, Nancy Knight and Virginia Ellis
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (Belle Books ISBN: 0-9673035-1-6)

Mossy Creek is my Christmas book. Which means, most of my relatives will get a copy this December.

This is the second book created by Belle Books, a publishing company formed by six multi-published authors. Whereas their first book, Sweet Tea and Jesus Shoes, is a collection of independent short stories about growing up in the south, Mossy Creek is a collection of connected short stories about a small town in the North Georgia Mountains. Each story stands alone but flows into the next one.

The book is delightful. I laughed and smiled, and even cried a time or two. Oh, let's be honest, Deborah Smith and Sandra Chastain both had me sobbing. The more I read, the more attached I became to the quirky southern characters, and by the time I finished, I was ready for Mossy Creek II.

Cover: The Great Santini   The Great Santini   by Pat Conroy
- - - (Bantam Books ISBN: 0-55326-892-9)
The Prince of Tides   by Pat Conroy
- - - (Bantam Books ISBN: 0-55326-888-0)

What can I say about Pat Conroy?

Other than I believe he's one of the great American novelist of our time. I've only read two of his books, The Great Santini and The Prince Of Tides, and that's not nearly enough. The characters in The Great Santini will grab you and not let go. You'll hate them and love them — both at the same time.

I read The Prince of Tides last year, and it was my first "Conroy" book. Now I wonder why I waited this long. If you've seen the movie, don't judge the book by that. Treat yourself and read the book. It's worth the time.

Cover: Where the Heart Is   Where the Heart Is   by Billie Letts
- - - (Warner Books ISBN: 0-44667-221-1)

This wasn't the first Oprah book I read, but it was the first I enjoyed. To be honest, I didn't want to read it. But Billie Letts was giving a talk at our local library, and I thought I should at least give her book a try. Well, I loved it. It's delightful, and contrary to a lot of Oprah's picks, it's an uplifting book. All of Ms. Letts' characters have a streak of nobility which I find reassuring. Again, don't judge the book by the movie.

Cover: White Oleander   White Oleander   by Janet Fitch
   (Back Bay Books ISBN: 0-31628-495-5)

White Oleander is a coming of age story about a young girl put into the foster care system when her mother is sent to prison for murder. A dark topic? Well, there's nothing light about this book, and at times, it's very disturbing. You'll want to shake some of the characters and hit others upside the head. But, that said, I couldn't stop reading it. I was fascinated. And there was one other thing that held me -- which might be a "writer" thing. The writing is remarkable. It was like reading poetry as prose. I was in awe. . . oh, and a bit jealous as well. <g>

Cover: Angela's Ashes   Angela's Ashes   by Frank McCourt
    (Touchstone Books ISBN: 0-68484-267-X)

My daughter bought me a copy of Angela's Ashes for Christmas last year. And yeah, I put off reading it for a while. After all, I love genre fiction, I want to escape when I read. And there's nowhere to hide when you read the book. It's an extraordinary work. Gripping. Heart-wrenching. And an absolute must for anyone who truly loves reading and books.

Cover: Survivor   Survivor   by Tabitha King
    (Signet ISBN: 0-45119-090-4)

I picked up Survivor by Tabitha King out of curiosity.

As an author myself, I thought it must be difficult to be married to one of the best-selling authors of our time. I mean, how do you not get lost in his fame? Well, Mrs. King doesn't need to hide behind her husband's reputation or clout to succeed. She's a talented author, talented enough that I believe she'd be better known if not married to Stephen King. Don't get me wrong, I'm a SK fan. And after this book, I became a TK fan as well.

You go, girl!!

Yes, yes, yes! Just like the rest of the world, I love the Harry Potter books. They're not just for children, and IMO, they're destined to be classics. And I love that a woman wrote them and got all the credit and money and clout. She deserves it all! Need I say more? Except, "Hurry up with Book #5."
